Janine from UPPERCASE Gallery never ceases to amaze me with her creative projects (including a new magazine on the way!), intriguing curated exhibits, and of course, her fantastic taste in vintage treasures. While she has an enviable collection of drool-worthy vintage typewriters on display at UPPERCASE, today she shares with us a space in her lovely home that showcases some of her favorite vintage things.

I have many favourite vintage things (many of which are typewriters, typewriter memorabilia and paper ephemera). Most of my typewriters are actually on display in UPPERCASE, but at home the one vintage thing that makes the biggest impact in my small house is this classroom map of Canada from 1962. My husband Glen bought it in a small town in British Columbia when we were on a road trip together. We lounge on the couch and look up at the map and think of places we’ve been or plan future trips. I’ll sometimes quiz Glen about where a particular lake, river or town is located and he’s nearly always right.

The dark wooden chest, dating back to the early 1900s, was given to me by my grandfather and is lined with old patterned paper and smells terribly of moth balls when opened. The red table is not vintage at all, but a lucky garage sale find from down the street ($4!).

Hanging non-traditional artwork that has meaning to you is such a wonderful way to decorate your home.  Thank you Janine for giving us a lovely peek into your home — as well as inspiring us to dream of road trips via vintage maps to come!

I just wanted to post a quick update regarding my recent absence.  I’ve been really inundated with fashion and prop styling projects…as it isn’t easy to find 35 red velvet chairs, 4 different types of retro picnic baskets, gold shoes with blue heels, and other items that are completly seasonal (thanks Santa!).  However, I’ll have an update REALLY soon with photos from recent photo shoots (which have great vintage inspirations!) and even a few crafty DIY ideas for the antique goods around your home.

We at {pH} have breaking news! Stamps have now been replaced by numbering machines.

Well, in 1930 that is. All of the cool kids (er, businesses) no longer use primitive stamps, but instead use “numbering machines.”

These 1930s symbol of vintage industrial charm are Bates Numbering Machines, which have advanced technology – they feature a dial which allows you to choose “consecutive,” “duplicate,” or “repeat.” With a seven number dial, you can be chic and stamp your phone number on calling cards (only giving those potential dates the right area code if they are cute), or use the antique numbering machine to stamp important dates on your scrapbooking pages. Or, simply let it complete your vintage industrial office perfectly.

As a supporter of the National Trust, which is our philanthropy, I love seeing stories of historic homes being revitalized. On the flip side, whenever I see an old home that has been replaced by a McMansion, I feel that the construction companies have literally taken architectural white out, only to replace the beautiful poetry with monotonous print.

When I saw this beautiful Bronx 16 room mansion, which is being restored by the Deans family, I was elated! If you look at the bones of the home, they are intricate, delicate, and stunning.

The detailed interior paneling and paint are still amazingly intact, and the Deans plan to convert this stunning room into their master bedroom…and who can blame them?

There is so much history in this beautiful Bronx mansion, and what is interesting is all of the personal relics left behind by its previous owners, including books, alcohol bottles, blueprints, typewriters, and even spittoons. It is vintage heaven!
