Mid Century Modern 60-Drawer Library Card Catalogs for Sale in Los Angeles

Feb 24, 2013 by

Friends, we are moving and unfortunately do not have room in our new home for my beloved mid-century modern library card catalogs.  I have three identical catalogs, and the measurements are 60″ tall x 40″ wide x 17″ deep.   The library catalogs have tapered MCM legs, are made of solid blonde wood, with 60 drawers each. They are in fabulous condition and are very difficult to find, especially in matching pairs. You’ve seen them before here as a display case for my air plant collection, and they are also so useful as art supply organizers, wine rack, and so much more!

The price is $900 for one or $1600 for a pair, and I’m happy to cut another deal if you buy all three. They are available for pickup in Walnut, in Los Angeles (zip code 91789), are very heavy and would likely require two men to move them. I’m also happy to accept payment via PayPal if you would like to coordinate shipping on your end. Please email me at poetry@poetichome.com if you are interested in giving these treasures a loving home!  Thanks so much!

Card Catalog: Transformed into an Air Plant Cabinet of Curiosities

Apr 25, 2012 by

After living in Maui, right next to the rainforest on the Road to Hana, I became enamored with bromeliads, and specifically, air plants.  After all, what’s not to love about a plant that seems to spring out of thin air, requires no soil, and only needs watering in the sink once a week?  Air plants are the “it” plant for 2012, as they have endless display possibilities.

For my first air plant display, I decided to go all out, and I have a dozen air plants, technically called tillandsia.  I have displayed all of them in one of my vintage library card catalogs, and I think the end result is a botanical cabinet of curiosities!  What do you think?

Here is a closer view of the air plants.  There are so many different species, each with its own texture, color, and style.  I only put the air plants in the top section of the card catalog, as I didn’t want my little one bumping his head on any of the drawers.

And here is a card catalog of mine from many years ago.  Clearly, I’ve always loved putting plants in card catalog drawers, but air plants have allowed me to take it to another level!

Have you too been bitten by the air plant bug?  I’d love to hear!

Card Catalog for Sale in Florida: A 107 Drawer Beauty from the 1940s!

Jun 27, 2011 by

Update:  As of 7/31/11, this lovely card catalog has sold!

Card catalog enthusiasts in Florida are in luck today!  Originally from the Winter Park Florida Public Library, this 1940s card catalog for sale is an impressive piece, standing 5 ft wide and 4 ft 9 inches tall.  The library retired this lovely piece in 1997 when it went digital, but now it can enjoy a new repurposed life in a happy home.  I’ve always wanted a large card catalog cabinet like this in my home, one that could really be the focal point of a room, making its presence known.

This card catalog for sale has 107 drawers, rather than the original 108.  However, there is a plaque, noting the history of the piece, that comes with the card catalog that can be placed over any drawer space you desire.  (In the photos, it has been placed on the very bottom right).

The listing price for this piece is $845.  I’ve seen card catalogs of this size go for $1,000 or more, so if you have always wanted a gorgeous card catalog of this scale, then this is a good deal.  Those interested in purchasing the card catalog for sale can contact Elaine. The card catalog has sold! She lives in the Orlando, Florida area, specifically in the city of Oviedo, near the campus of University of Central Florida.

As always, I would LOVE to see and feature photos of the card catalog in your home!

Library Card Catalogs for Sale: Nostalgic Beauties in Tennessee

Jan 10, 2011 by

UPDATE:  As of January 19th, the last card catalog has been sold!

UPDATE:  As of January 11th, one of the beauties have found a home, and at this time, only one of these library card catalogs for sale is available.

Lovers of library card catalogs in Tennesee and nearby states are in for a treat!  Two 30-drawer, double-tiered library card catalogs are for sale in Chattanooga, Tennessee!  Better yet, Melinda, the current owner, is thoughtfully willing to drive up to a 50-mile radius to meet the lucky future owners of these card catalogs for sale.

These are dark wood card catalogs from an old library, and according to Melinda, “they are in excellent condition, although a few rods are missing out of one and there may be a few scuffs on them.”

I personally love the double-tiers, which allow you to create an eye-catching display and a fantastic organizational piece with convenient shelves that slide out.  Or you could even separate the two pieces to create even more nooks of library card catalog goodness in your home!

She is selling each card catalog for $400, and she is open to taking PayPal, although it is a local pick-up / meet-up purchase only.  Interested card catalog enthusiasts can contact Melinda to snag one of these beauties at melindamartin1@mac.com SOLD!

A Glamorous Library Card Catalog Renovation

Sep 27, 2010 by

Have you ever seen a library card catalog don high heels and sip cocktails?  Me neither — until I saw what the couple at Dream Book Design did!   The DIY couple repurposed a library card catalog into a glamorous, renovated buffet that is divine!  First, let’s take a gander at the “before,” with its hardware stripped.

And here is the stunning after!  Does it remind you too of a librarian dressed in her chicest outfit at a fancy 1940s dinner party?

While I disagree with the title of their post, “turning old junk to beauty,” as library card catalogs are absolute treasures that are slowly becoming extinct, I do wholeheartedly agree with the beauty part!

Card Catalogs for Sale: From the Ryan Aeronautical Library

Sep 7, 2010 by

UPDATE:  As of 11:30 AM on September 7th, both of the card catalogs have been sold.  Since the card catalogs were sold within four hours of being featured here, did you miss out on these?  Make sure to kindly sign up for Poetic Home’s RSS feed so you can stay updated on the latest card catalogs for sale!

My dear friends at the San Diego Air & Space Museum (where I enjoyed visiting many times at Balboa Park, both for the airplanes and fashion shows) have two 60-drawer library card catalogs for sale, which are originally from the Ryan Aeronautical Library no less!

Both card catalog cabinets are made of maple wood, featuring brass handles with a lovely patina, and each cabinet has three pull out tables/shelves.  One cabinet is $400, while the other library card catalog for sale with the varnish peeling (sounds like an excellent restoration candidate to me) is $300.  Contact Katrina at (619) 234-8291 ext 123 or kpescador@sdasm.org. SOLD

The best part is that you will not only have a lovely literary piece of history for your home, but the proceeds from the library card catalogs will go towards the Museum’s library and archives — which are the third largest kind in the nation!

If a poetic reader snaps up one of these babies, I would love (as always) to see the card catalog in its full glory in your home!
